Effect
Every student writes downtheir telephone number (without area code) or any number of as manydigits.
Now shuffle these digits around to make a smallernumber.
Example: 6358 can be shuffled to make3865.
Themore digits in their number, the better!

3 41 6 2 2 9=> 3+1+6+2+2+9 = 23
Nowgo around the class,asking forthe final answers and IMMEDIATELY tell the pupils which numberthey highlighted :
Answer= “23”
“You highlighted '4”

One of the most incrediblepropertiesof our number system is its power to make tricky calculations veryeasy.
Since we write our numbers in base 10, it follows that when wesubtract the digits from a number we always end up with a multiple of9.
(This is basically saying that 1000 – 1 and 100 – 1and10 –1 are all multiples of 9.)

Oneof the properties of anymultipleof 9 is that its digital root (the sum of its digits, with theaddition repeated until a single digit is reached) is also 9.
Puttingthese two togetherwe can seethat the answer to the subtraction is always going to be a multipleof nine.
All you have to do is answer back with the smallest numberthat will make their total up to a multiple of 9.
If it is already amultiple of 9, then they must have crossed out 0 or 9, but zero wasforbidden, therefore 9 is the answer.

Below are links to a full set of arithmetic math flash cards for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.. with a twist! Your kids will be coloring them! You'll find two math flash cards per page.. Print them out (black and white), cut along the SOLID line and fold along the dashed line. If you want to get fancy, you can use a glue stick to mount them onto some tag board or a recipe card. Here's the key: Have your kids color the math flash cards in (before you fold them or mount them).. And while they are coloring each one, have them read, think and say what's on the card. Tell them to really concentrate on it! So, while they are coloring in the 5x2=10 card, have them think (or say out loud), '5 times 2 is 10.' This will be a big project for them (as is learning their math facts), so have them do a little at a time. This will give them visual reinforcement, make them take the time to think about each one (while they are coloring) and it will give them a feeling of ownership to the cards -- and to the math.
